The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess to End One Week Early
The producers of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess announced today that instead of closing on September 30, the Broadway production will shut its doors on September 23. With the new date in place, the show will close after 322 performances.
This new take on the play Porgy premiered at the American Repertory Theater last summer. It officially opened on Broadway Jan. 12 with an original closing date of June 24 . Due to positive reviews and a cast headlined by Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald, producers were prompted to extend the twice through Sept. 30. To make way for the next project at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, however, the show will now close one week early.
Tony-nominated Hair director Diane Paulus staged the production, cuting it down from its original four-hour running time to two-and-a-half hours. Porgy and Bess has music by George Gershwin, lyrics by his brother Ira and a book and lyrics by Dubose Heyward. It is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Rebecca Gold.
