Matilda the Musical Sets Broadway Opening Date
The long awaited Broadway arrival of Matilda the Musical has finally been announced. The show will cross the pond to open at the Shubert Theatre on April 11, 2013 with previews beginning March 4. The show will be directed by Tony winner Matthew Warchus, feature music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin and a book by playwright Dennis Kelly. It will be produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Dodgers.
Matilda the Musical, based on Dahl’s 1988 book about a girl who unleashes her magical powers on nasty parents and an evil headmistress, premiered at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010. After playing to sold out crowds for 12 weeks, the production moved to London’s West End on October 25, 2011 where it remains open at the Cambridge Theatre. Casting will be announced at a later date.
