Fela! Returns to Broadway for Limited Run
Beginning tonight, the 2010 Tony-nominated musical Fela! will return to Broadway for 32 encore performances. Fela! was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 2010 and ultimately won three for Best Direction of a Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Choreography. The show is currently on its first national tour and will perform at the Al Hirschfeld Theater for the entirety of its engagement.
Fela!, which is produced by Jay Z with Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, tells the story of Fela Kuti, the creator of Afrobeat. The musical focuses on the life events of Kuti when he was the target of 1,000 government soldiers assigned to end his public performances at the legendary Lagos nightclub The Shrine. The original production of Fela! opened on Broadway in November 2009 and ran until January 2011. A family friendly musical filled with exhilarating music, audiences are sure to fall in love with Fela!
