Beginning this evening, Cybill Shepherd, Kristin Davis and John Stamos will join the cast of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. Shepherd and Davis will make their Broadway debut when the curtain rises tonight. John Stamos, however, is a seasoned Broadway veteran who has performed in four different shows. The three new cast members will replace, respectively, Candice Bergen, Kerry Butler and Eric McCormack.

Gore Vidal’s The Best Man originally premiered in 1960 and ran for 520 performances. President Ronald Reagan auditioned for the lead role in the original run but Vidal thought that he could not play a convincing president. A revival of the show opened on Broadway in 2000 only to close after 121 performances.

The current running production, starring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury and John Larroquette, was set to close July 8 but has since been extended twice. The show was also nominated for two Tony Awards, Best Revival of a Play and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for James Earl Jones. Gore Vidal’s The Best ManĀ  is currently running at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater.
